There is a difference between cabinetry that is manufactured and cabinetry that is made. Olive kitchens are designed with the same principles we look for in a beautiful piece of furniture: thoughtful proportions, substantial frames, considered details and materials chosen for how they will age. Our cabinetry is built using traditional face-frame construction by skilled Mennonite cabinetmakers in Ontario. Rather than disappearing into the architecture as a series of perfectly uniform boxes, an Olive kitchen has depth, shadow, weight and character.
It is designed to feel as though it has always belonged to the house.

traditional face-frame construction
At the heart of an Olive cabinet is its face frame — a substantial wood frame applied to the front of the cabinet, with doors and drawers set neatly within it. This traditional method of construction gives the cabinetry its depth, shadow and furniture-like quality. It allows individual cupboards, dressers, vanities and wardrobes to feel more like considered pieces within a room rather than a continuous wall of cabinetry. The proportions of the rails, stiles, doors and drawers are carefully considered so that the cabinetry feels balanced and appropriate to the architecture around it.
real materials
We choose real wood for the warmth, strength and character it brings to a home. Wood has grain, texture and subtle variation. No two boards behave or appear exactly the same, and that individuality remains present even after a piece has been painted or stained. Unlike engineered materials created for complete uniformity, wood continues to respond to its surroundings. Changes in temperature and humidity cause it to expand and contract naturally throughout the seasons. We consider this movement part of working honestly with the material.
the character of painted wood
On painted cabinetry, the natural movement of wood can sometimes reveal subtle lines where pieces of the face frame are joined. These are often referred to as witness lines. They may become slightly more or less visible as the seasons change and are an expected characteristic of traditionally constructed painted wood cabinetry. You may also notice small variations in grain, texture or the way a painted surface reflects light. These details are not flaws in the finish. They are part of the distinction between cabinetry made from real wood and cabinetry designed to achieve an entirely seamless, manufactured surface.

Because every Olive project is made specifically for its home, slight variations from one piece to another are part of the process. A joint, edge or painted surface may carry small evidence of its making. Doors and drawers are individually fitted. Grain varies from board to board. Finishes respond differently to the wood beneath them. We value these characteristics for the same reason we value them in antique furniture, traditional millwork and old houses — they give a piece life.
designed to age well
An Olive kitchen or room is intended to be lived with. Over time, painted surfaces may soften in areas that are touched often. Timber may deepen in colour. Small marks may appear. Hardware will develop patina. Natural materials will change subtly as they are exposed to light, use and the rhythm of everyday life. Rather than expecting cabinetry to remain untouched, we design it with the belief that age can add character. The goal is not perfection on the day of installation, but cabinetry that continues to feel beautiful and appropriate years later.
beauty over uniformity
If the goal is an entirely seamless painted finish with no visible evidence of joints, grain, movement or variation, an engineered cabinet material may be a better fit. Olive takes a different approach. We are drawn to the depth of a face frame, the warmth of real wood and the quiet irregularities that come with traditional construction. They are reminders that the cabinetry was not simply manufactured, but made. For us, quality is found not in the absence of character, but in thoughtful proportion, enduring construction, beautiful materials and the care with which each piece is put together.
