from first sketch to final installation
We believe cabinetry should feel like part of the architecture rather than something added to it. Every Olive project begins with the room itself — its proportions, natural light, surrounding materials and the way it will be lived in. From there, we design cabinetry with a careful eye for scale, balance and detail, allowing each piece to feel considered, useful and entirely at home in its surroundings.
Our approach is rooted in the character of furniture. We look to traditional joinery, old houses and enduring forms for inspiration, favouring substantial proportions, natural materials and details that give a room depth and permanence. Rather than beginning with a catalogue of standard cabinets, we think about the individual pieces that make up a room, a pantry cupboard, a worktable, a dresser, a vanity or a wardrobe, and how each one relates to the architecture around it. The cabinetry is then made in Ontario by skilled Mennonite cabinetmakers using traditional methods and real wood. These materials are chosen not for perfect uniformity, but for the warmth, texture and character they bring to a home over time. We are drawn to rooms that feel collected rather than newly installed, and to materials that become more beautiful as they are lived with. For us, good cabinetry is not defined by trend or excess, but by thoughtful proportions, honest construction and the quiet sense that it has always belonged.
our process
01 the conversation
We begin by learning about your home, your project and how you hope to use the space. Whether we are designing a kitchen, pantry, dressing room, vanity or built-in cabinetry, this first stage gives us an understanding of the architecture, your practical needs and the feeling you would like the finished room to have. Following our initial conversation, we will outline the scope of work, anticipated investment and next steps for your project.
02 understanding the space
Once the project begins, we take detailed measurements and spend time understanding the architecture of the room. We consider ceiling heights, windows, openings, sightlines and adjoining spaces alongside the more practical requirements of storage, appliances and everyday use. The goal is not simply to fit cabinetry into a room, but to design it as part of the room itself.
03 designing the cabinetry
This is where the room begins to take shape. We develop the layout, cabinetry elevations and individual pieces, carefully considering proportion, symmetry, function and how each element relates to the architecture around it. Rather than approaching the room as a collection of standard cabinet boxes, we often think in terms of furniture — a pantry cupboard, dresser, worktable, vanity or wardrobe — allowing the finished space to feel more collected and considered.
04 materials and details
Once the overall design has been established, we refine the details that give each Olive project its character. Door profiles, mouldings, hardware, wood species, painted finishes, interior configurations and furniture details are selected together to create a cohesive whole. Our collection is intentionally considered rather than endless. We favour natural materials, enduring profiles and details that we believe will continue to feel relevant as the home ages around them.
05 design presentation
Once the initial design has been developed, we present the proposed space in detail. This presentation includes the cabinetry layout, elevations and 3D renderings, allowing you to experience the room as a whole and understand how the proportions, materials and individual pieces will come together. The renderings give us an opportunity to review the design from multiple perspectives, refine key details and make thoughtful adjustments before moving into the building.
06 the making
Once the design is approved, your cabinetry moves into the hands of our skilled Mennonite cabinetmakers here in Ontario. Using traditional face-frame construction and time-honoured methods, each piece is made specifically for your project. Because we work with real wood and traditional construction, subtle variations in grain, texture and finish are part of the character of the cabinetry. These natural qualities are something we embrace — evidence of materials and pieces made by hand rather than manufactured to appear perfectly uniform.
07 installation
When the cabinetry is complete, it is carefully delivered and installed in your home. Our team oversees the cabinetry installation and final detailing to ensure the proportions, alignments and finishing touches are considered as carefully as the original design. The result is cabinetry intended to feel less like something newly installed and more like something that belongs to the architecture of the home.
Made to Live With
An Olive room is not intended to remain untouched. Real wood will respond subtly to changes in season and humidity. Painted surfaces will develop character. Materials will soften and settle with use. We believe this is part of the beauty of traditionally made cabinetry — pieces designed not simply for the day they are installed, but for the years that follow.
